"The Splinter" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 6. In this episode, SpongeBob gets a splinter at work and tries to hide it from Mr. Krabs.

Synopsis
The Krusty Krab opens on a seemingly average morning and SpongeBob is extremely happy. He gets the Krabby Patties ready and soon gets an order of two Krabby Patties plus an insult from Squidward, which is to no effect. His excitement eventually causes him to accidentally throw his spatula into the ceiling and when trying to get it out, he falls, nearly being injured by scissors and swords. His spatula saves him from that happening.

Upon landing, SpongeBob accidentally trips on tartar sauce. His thumb drags across the wooden floor and rams into a small slab that breaks in half, giving him a splinter that immediately makes his thumb red and swollen; his weak arms keep him from getting it out and even biting it does not work. The customer that ordered earlier is turning impatient and the splinter keeps SpongeBob from holding the spatula needed to serve him; he decides to tie it on his nose, but Squidward soon finds out about it, and he tricks SpongeBob.
Squidward then decides to mess with SpongeBob by convincing him that he will get sent home by Mr. Krabs if he sees the splinter and flushes his hat and spatula down the toilet. SpongeBob begs Squidward not to get him sent home, but is unsuccessful. Squidward also hints that he will tell Mr. Krabs about the splinter. As Squidward gets his full enjoyment about the situation, he and SpongeBob watch Mr. Krabs drive a customer away with his cheap behavior.
The splinter is getting worse.
Anxious that he would be sent home by Mr. Krabs due to his splinter, SpongeBob calls Patrick to get treated for it, who comes in a fake doctor's uniform to cure the splinter; however, Patrick's 'treatment' only ends up with the splinter further into SpongeBob's thumb, making it swell more. Patrick tries to use garbage on it to help stop the swelling, but unfortunately, he inadvertently infects it; Patrick then acts like a fake doctor, saying that his 'shift' is over, as he returns to his normal duties.
SpongeBob's pus is released from his thumb after Mr. Krabs pulls out the splinter from it.
SpongeBob soon runs into Mr. Krabs and Squidward, the latter having told the former about the splinter, and tries to hide the splinter from them in fear of Mr. Krabs sending him home. When he finally holds his swollen thumb up, Squidward faints at the disgusting image. Instead of sending SpongeBob home, Mr. Krabs easily pulls the splinter out with his claw, but as Mr. Krabs sees the infected boil about to burst, it seems that only confetti came out. Suddenly, as Mr. Krabs announces that the splinter problem has been solved, a big eruption of pus from his thumb comes out to impact Mr. Krabs, who shields himself with an umbrella from the pus stream. After that, SpongeBob is finally cured once the pus finally dissipates and big boil shrinks down. His thumb returns to normal pretty quickly.
As the episode ends, Mr. Krabs expresses relief as he almost would have given SpongeBob worker's compensation, having to pay his employees if they don't come to work for whatever reason. Hearing this, Squidward then realizes that he could get sent home early and still get paid by getting injured. Accordingly, he attempts to injure himself with the cash register in order to get his worker's compensation, only to find out by Mr. Krabs that his shift had ended two minutes ago, much to his dismay.
Production
The episode was confirmed and added to the US Copyright Office on May 8, 2008,[4] along with its sister episode "Slide Whistle Stooges."
On May 16, 2008, creative director Vincent Waller told fans to "keep [their] eyes peeled" for this episode on his blog, as "[they wouldn't] want to miss it."[5]

- When SpongeBob's spatula is in the freezer getting the Krabby Patties, there is a caveman frozen in ice.

- This is the first episode for three things:
- The first episode where Sean Charmatz is not a storyboard artist.
- The first episode to use the 2008 Nickelodeon lightbulb logo at the end of the credits, along with its sister episode.

- On Netflix United Kingdom, the Mandarin Chinese audio track for this episode as well as its sister episode have low-pitched audio.[citation needed]
- On the local Indonesian TV channel, GTV (formerly Global TV), the word "Idiot" is blurred out the note Squidward gives to SpongeBob, due to Indonesian cultural controversies.[citation needed]
Cultural references
- Squidward pretending to crush the customer's face is a reference to the recurring "Head Crusher" sketch on the Canadian comedy series, The Kids in the Hall.
Errors
- SpongeBob's thumb turns red when he gets the splinter, and then, his thumb turns dark purple with green pus when Patrick put the garbage compress on in. However, when SpongeBob later shows Mr. Krabs and Squidward his thumb, it is red again.
- When SpongeBob opens the box that he took out from his pants, it is half-ly in the table, but there clearly is not a hole there before he puts the box down.
Large kitchen.
- The Krusty Krab kitchen ceiling suddenly becomes much higher when SpongeBob realizes his spatula is stuck in it.
- At first, SpongeBob makes two Krabby Patties, but in a later scene, they disappear.
- At first, when Patrick changes, his mouth turns brown. It changes to red in the next shot.
- When Patrick puts SpongeBob's foot in his mouth, his shoe and sock is removed. When the scene cuts back to SpongeBob and Patrick, the sock is still on his foot. And when Patrick removes the foot from his mouth, the shoe is also on.
- SpongeBob puts the open box full of ingredients on the grill, but when he looks at the Krabby Patty, it is gone.
SpongeBob's belt is gone, and the splinter is not on his thumb.
- When SpongeBob touches his heart, his belt is missing. The splinter is not on his thumb either.
- When SpongeBob makes two Krabby Patties, there are dents in them, from the splinter, but when the patties are on the windowsill, the dents are gone.
