1999 (MCMXCIX) was a common year starting on Friday of the Gregorian calendar. It is the first year of SpongeBob SquarePants and the year of season 1.
This year and the next year, 2000, are the only years where the series premiered episodes in the 20th century and 2nd millennium, along with being the only year where episodes premiered in the 90s.
Most of season 1 was produced and aired this year, with 13 episodes ("Help Wanted" - "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost"; "Scaredy Pants" - "Karate Choppers") aired on American television out of order. In packaging order, the twelfth episode ("The Chaperone" and "Employee of the Month") was held until the following year, while airing internationally prior to its American premiere.
The first several episodes of Season 2 entered production this year ("Your Shoe's Untied" - "Big Pink Loser"), but no episodes of the season would be finished until 2000.
