2003 (MMIII) was a common year starting on Wednesday of the Gregorian calendar. This year saw the official conclusion of season 2, ending it with "Gary Takes a Bath" on July 26, despite first premiering on Nicktoons on June 17, 2002.
Only five episodes from season 3 and one from season 2 premiered on Nickelodeon in the United States, making it the second shortest year of SpongeBob besides 2014.
Production was halted to focus on The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, meaning no episodes were produced. Season 3 had concluded production in mid-2002, while season 4 wouldn't enter production until mid-2004.
Rough Draft Korea began the process of animating The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in December of 2003, which lasted until the following September.[1]
